REINDEER 00-14

REINDEER 00-14

NOME, AK Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) herd. Reindeer were introduced to the Seaward Peninsula in the 1890's from Siberia as a domesticated food source after Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) populations declined. Reindeer are still herded by natives but many have interbred with wild Caribou (considered the same species) and range freely.
